Technology Solutions for the Legal and Financial Industries
Since 1981 ESI Laboratory (ESILAB) has specialized in providing scalable big data solutions to financial services, legal, government, pharmaceutical, and defense industries. By combining deep domain expertise with innovative technology, we provide our clients with access and insight into the mission-critical financial and legal data generated during normal business operations. We unveil, structure, and organize data that takes center stage in the context of big-ticket litigation. At the intersection of law, finance, and technology ESILAB delivers data-driven insight to manage litigation, investigations, and Freedom of Information Act requests.
REDACTION ANALYZER
ESILAB’s Redaction Analyzer provides lawyers and litigation support professionals with the ability to identify each and every redaction in image-based eDiscovery productions in a matter of hours. Secure, user-friendly, highly automated, and scalable, the Redaction Analyzer can be run against both inbound and outbound productions and is able to identify a wide variety of redaction formats (including unlabeled black box redactions and text-based redactions).
The Redaction Analyzer results can be used to identify redacted documents produced prior to receipt of applicable redaction/privilege logs as well as to test the veracity of such logs once received. In addition to operating on a standalone basis, the Redaction Analyzer seamlessly interfaces with most major document review platform databases via its ability to generate an overlay file in industry-standard load file formats.
Additional capability is provided by the Redaction Analyzer’s advanced redaction blackline capability which provides users with the ability to identify the deletion of redactions in the event of a subsequently amended production. Easy-to-use built-in quality control tools also provide the ability to quickly identify and exclude false positives.

LEGAL & FINANCIAL SERVICES
ESILAB applies the extensive litigation and transactional legal expertise gained at White Shoe and Magic Circle firms to provide highly focused big data products and services to a broad range of complex disputes (product liability, mass torts, financial services, etc.).
Our former litigators have played central roles in some of the highest-profile civil, criminal, and regulatory proceedings in the United States, England, and Hong Kong.
We also have on staff former transactional lawyers who have represented global financial institutions, regulatory bodies, and trade associations in debt and equity capital markets, insurance, and derivatives (including structured products) transactions. These individuals have particular familiarity with the frequently negotiated legal, credit, and margin terms typically found in a broad range of trading agreements used to document relationships between participants in the financial markets.

LEGAL & FINANCIAL BIG DATA CONSULTING
ESILAB’s big data consulting practice addresses the complex data requirements of participants in the global financial and legal services markets. Operating in areas not typically addressed by traditional eDiscovery and BPO data vendors, ESILAB’s consultants deploy deep legal/financial domain expertise, advanced technology, and experienced project management personnel to bring legal and economic transparency to the vast amounts of structured, semi-structured, and unstructured operational data generated during normal business operations as well as in the context of big-ticket litigation.
REPRESENTATIVE ENGAGEMENTS
Following are representative of the types of engagements recently undertaken by ESILAB
Regulated Investment Fund
ESILAB performed the automated conversion of 40,000 pages of public offering materials filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The source material was in unstructured .pdf and .txt formats. Once ESILAB converted the relevant material into a structured format, certain key legal provisions were automatically identified, extracted, and incorporated into a report for further analysis by the client’s legal team.

Fortune 100 Company
After extensive due diligence by the client, ESILab was commissioned to automatically parse, normalize and extract data from semi-structured discovery-related materials. In total in excess of 1.5 million data points were delivered for export into another vendor's case management system. In addition, ESILAB was able to provide further insight into the client’s data by performing complex calculations for inclusion into reports that continue to inform the client’s overall litigation strategy.

Regulated Investment Fund
Our client required technology to assist in the re-underwriting of residential loan files. The engagement involved enriching XML data from a third-party data vendor and creating a sophisticated, user-friendly interface that presented loan file/tape data in an easy-to-read format together with blackline functionality highlighting updates to loan breach finding narratives and materiality conclusions. A major factor in improving the quality, depth, and speed of the re-underwriting review was the fact that ESILab hyperlinked the loan file data to the original data source located in underwriting guidelines, loan files, and supporting documents.

Project Management
ESILAB’s project managers are responsible for managing projects within the agreed time frame and within budget. A strong project management methodology underpins all of ESILAB’s services and products. This approach has been developed using core components of industry standards such as Project Management Professional (PMP) and Six Sigma Green Belt professional certifications. We have modified these processes specifically to cater for the unique requirements of the legal and financial services industries.
Once engaged our goal is to integrate seamlessly into your team liaising with senior and junior client representatives, in-house and external legal counsel, project managers and technologists.
